FURMAN PS-REL AC SENSING REMOTE CONTROL RELAY FOR SEQUENCER
Product Description
The PS-REL AC Relay senses the presence of 120VAC and closes an SPDT relay. The relay contacts are available on a barrier strip. It may be used with any product that needs a contact closure in response to AC voltage. A common application for the PS-REL is to extend the capacity of the switched outlet found on many home theater receiver/amps. In this way, a wireless remote can turn on the receiver, which in turn powers its switched outlet, which triggers the PS-REL, which then activates a Furman power sequencer like the PS-PRO. The system is then capable of switching many large power amps or other power-hungry equipment in multiple locations, attached to multiple circuits.

This Series solid state relay from Magnecraft & Struthers-Dunn includes an integral heat sink.
Capacitive loads or motor loads draw significantly more current at start-up than they do at steady state. You must look at surge currents to be sure the relay can withstand the load it's expected to control. Typical one-cycle surge ratings are 10 to 20 times higher than rated current.
You also must consider load characteristics when turning off the load. By their nature, inductive loads generate voltage spikes as much as two times the line voltage. Unsuppressed spikes can damage the relay output. The best way to suppress spikes is to kill them at the source with filtering, preventing them from getting back on the power line.
